Matt jumped slightly as he caught Jimmy easily, staring at him in shock. "You alright?"
"Yeah," Jimmy said, getting back onto his feet right. He stared at Matt, nearly eye level with the slightly taller boy.
Matt turned slowly towards the sink and began washing his hands.
"I'll be out in a minute okay?" Matt said, watching Jimmy head for the door.
Nodding, Jimmy left the room only to see his mom and Gary sharing a kiss over the table. The food hadn't come yet, so Jimmy slipped outside for a moment and lit up a cigarette.
He only smoked when he didn't have a pad of paper and something to write with in the times that he felt his anxiety prickling up his spine.
Taking a drag off the cigarette, Jimmy exhaled the smoke and felt the calming
nicotine doing it's work. He looked into the restaurant to see Matt going back to the table.
Allison and Gary smiled at Matt, and the three of them started to talk about something that made them all laugh.
"Probly sports," Jimmy muttered, flicking the cigarette to the ground before snuffing it out. He waited a few minutes before he pulled out his small bottle of cologne from his pocket, and he spritzed himself.
When he went back in, he paused in the doorway as Gary told a story about Matt making a perfect shot into a basket during a game.
Matt played with his napkin, listening to his dad before glancing up at Jimmy, doing a double take.
"Dad can we talk about something else? Something more interesting?"
Gary looked at his son in confusion before saying, "Um...alright." He began to struggle for a new conversation topic after being derailed from his train of thought.
Jimmy took a deep breath and, again, forced a smile. He went back to the table and sat down, looking at Gary.
"So, what happened when the buzzer went off?" Jimmy asked, ignoring his mother's wide-eyed stare at his question.
Matt also stared in disbelief as his father became more than eager to finish his story.
"You could see the shock on Matt's face as he made that last point. The whole crowd went wild. I couldn't stop telling him how proud I was when we went out to eat afterwards." He patted his blushing son's shoulder enthusiastically.
Jimmy smiled when he felt his mother pat his knee under the table, and then a plate of steaming steak and fries were placed in front of him. He was digging in before the waitress had even set down his mother's plate.
The dinner seemed to go smoother as they ate, barely any of them talked as they all seemed to be hungry. A few basses were now playing in the restaurant's corner along with the violinist.
Jimmy popped the last fry into his mouth before he sat back, wiping his mouth with a satisfied, quiet burp.
After the ticket came and the tip was paid, the two parent-son duos began scooting out of their booth, standing before the two teenagers began heading toward the exit.
"Wait a minute, I forgot something." Gary said, making them all turn around.
Jimmy arched a brow, his tummy pooching slightly against his shirt from how much he ate. He slid his hands into his pockets, trying not to look too impatient.
"What'd you leave?" Allison asked, slipping her arms into her coat.
Gary rummaged in his pocket before slowly lowering himself on one knee, smiling up at Allison. In his hand was a little black box, and he flipped the top open to present a diamond ring.
"Allison Sullivan," Gary said slowly, voice tremored slightly. "Will you marry me?"
"Oh. My God." Matt uttered.
Jimmy went numb, and his chest constricted as he watched his mother begin to cry happily as she fell to her knees to hug him.
"Yes!" Allison exclaimed, seeming just as shocked as the two teenagers watching this.
The restaurant exploded into applaud, and the waitresses and waiters began to ring bells in celebration.
"I'm going to be sick," Matt grumbled, looking very convincing as he ran from the restaurant holding his stomach.
Jimmy barely heard Matt, all he could do was stare at his mother as if she had just been shot. His hearing tunneled, and the bells and cheering people seemed miles away as his vision tunneled for a moment.
Allison stood, and even though she stood and spoke to Gary with tears on her face, Jimmy couldn't hear her.
Now, Jimmy's stare shifted to Gary.
Gary smiled, kissing Allison's cheek, wiping her tears before smiling at Jimmy. His smile faded slightly as he said, "Jimmy? Where's Matt? ...Jimmy?"
Allison had her back to them as she showed her ring to one of the enthusiastic waitresses.
Jimmy stared at the waitress now, it was the blonde with the Metallica clip.
Why is that waitress so happy? Why are these strangers cheering their motherfucking heads off? They have no clue what this is going to be like for me. Shut up. Shut up.
Jimmy snapped out of it, and he looked at Gary without a word.
Gary looked at Jimmy uncertainly before touching his shoulder gently. "Are you alright, son?"
"I'm not your son, and I'm fine," Jimmy stated, turning around. "Tell Mom I'm in the car. And, Matt's outside puking." He left the restaurant, walking to the car in a daze.
Jimmy passed a hunched over Matt, but he let Gary take care of the puking boy.
Jimmy knew he would get his own talk from his mother when they got home.
~
"Honey," Allison stepped into Jimmy's bedroom a few hours later.
Jimmy raised his head up to show her he was listening, but he didn't want to talk right now.
"Baby, I know this is going to be different. For all of us, this will be different. But," Allison went to his bed and sat at the edge of it. She ran her hand over the wrinkles of the bed sheets to smooth them out.
"But," she started again, gazing at her son who gazed back underneath his arm across his eyes. "I love him, Jimmy. We've dated for five months, and I've never been more sure in my life. I wasn't even this sure about your father."
Allison trailed off there, unsure if that's what he wanted to hear or not.
Jimmy sighed and looked away, trying desperately to be sincere as he spoke, "No, I get it. And, I'm happy for you, Mom. But, I don't even know him. He could have at least waited until I knew him."
Nodding, Allison rubbed Jimmy's bicep. "And he apologized for that over the phone. I just got off the phone with him, and apparently Matt's just as shocked as you."
"I bet."
Allison stood up and kissed his forehead before she turned his light out. The blue lava lamp gave a soft, calming glow throughout the room.
"Goodnight, Jimmy. I love you."
"G'nite, love you, too," Jimmy mumbled.
He watched his door shut, and he laid real still until he heard his mother's door close.
Getting up, Jimmy fumbled to get his jeans on in the dark. He grabbed his pad of paper and a green pen off the windowsill before climbing out onto the car port.
After writing a list of how many sounds he could hear in the night, Jimmy rocked back and forth with his knees wrapped in his arms.
Silent tears rolled down his cheeks as he hiccuped, gripping his knees tightly.
How will he react to me when I get too hyper? Or when I get too distracted or when I have anxiety attacks? Jimmy suddenly went rigid. Will he try to make me stop writing lists?
His father had tried to keep his pad of paper away from him to try and "help" him, but it had only made Jimmy's anxiety worse.
Jimmy believed his father had meant well, but now he was frightened of people taking his paper from him.
Picking up his paper, Jimmy wrote down, "I miss my dad."
He hadn't heard from his dad in about a month, and when he tried to call him, the phone was never answered.
There was only a month left of school before the summer and then it was Senior year. The thought made Jimmy's stomach tense suddenly, so he switched his thought process.
Jimmy wondered what his dad would have to say about the engagement, but he knew his dad couldn't stop his mom. Still, he needed to vent to someone.
Surely, Dad would listen. Jimmy smiled a little, feeling somewhat better.
He stayed out there for a little longer, and, before he knew it, he was thinking about Matt.
Jimmy thought about how solid Matt's chest was and how his arms were so--
"I think it's time for bed," Jimmy said to himself, standing quickly. He was a little shaky at where his thoughts were going, and he tried to ignore the trembling heart in his chest.
He climbed into bed and blocked those thoughts by looking over his past lists until he fell asleep.

I feel so bad for the boys.. :c
You write emotions so well, darling, I love it. I cried when Gary proposed because I knew how hard the boys would take it. Can't wait for the next chapters!
